Unit 3
Basic Steps — Dodhiyu & Hudo
Dodhiyu (two-step) and Hudo (side step with spin) are the two foundational Garba steps. Practice them individually and then linked in a circle.
What You'll Learn
- ✓Dodhiyu — 2-step with tali
- ✓Hudo — side step, cross, and return
- ✓Moving counter-clockwise in the circle
- ✓Keeping arms soft and swinging
📋 Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1Dodhiyu — the two-step foundationDodhiyu means 'two steps'. The pattern is: Step right foot to the right (count 1) — bring left foot to meet right (count 2) — Clap (with beat) — Step right foot to the right again (count 3) — bring left foot to meet (count 4) — Clap. Each two-step phrase moves you counter-clockwise in the circle.💡 TipDodhiyu is the first step every Gujarati child learns. Keep the steps small and even — this is not a march, it's a gentle two-step with a bounce.
- 2Add arm swing to DodhiyuAs you step right, swing both arms to the right side — elbows soft, wrists relaxed, hands naturally open. As you bring the left foot in, arms return to centre. The arms swing opposite to the usual expectation: they go in the direction of travel, not opposing. This creates the open, generous quality of Garba movement.💡 TipImagine carrying two light objects and swinging them outward as you step. The arm swing should feel effortless — no tension in the elbows or wrists.
- 3Dodhiyu with 3-tali clapNow combine Dodhiyu footwork with the 3-tali clap from Unit 2. Step-step-CLAP-CLAP (2 claps during the closed position) — step-step-CLAP. Moving counter-clockwise, the clap happens as the feet come together. Practice for 16 counts continuously.💡 TipThe challenge is keeping the step size even while your arms are doing the claps. Many beginners stop their feet during the clap — keep moving!
- 4Hudo — side step and crossHudo is a side step with a cross behind. Step right foot to the right (count 1) — cross left foot behind the right (count 2) — step right foot to right again (count 3) — bring left foot to meet (count 4). The 'cross behind' is the distinctive Hudo movement — the left foot crosses behind the right, not in front.💡 TipThe cross-behind is what creates the slight spinning sensation in Hudo. As the left foot crosses behind, your hip naturally rotates — let it, don't resist it.
- 5Add the Hudo arm patternDuring the cross-step in Hudo, both arms extend forward at chest height with a small flourish — wrists rotate outward as the hands reach forward. This simultaneous arm extension and cross-step is the signature visual of Hudo.💡 TipThe arm extension and the cross-step happen at exactly the same moment — count 2. If the arm extends late, the Hudo loses its characteristic 'flourish'.
- 6Alternate Dodhiyu and Hudo in circleNow alternate: 4 counts of Dodhiyu, 4 counts of Hudo, 4 counts of Dodhiyu, 4 counts of Hudo — continuously for 32 counts while maintaining the counter-clockwise circle. This combination is a complete beginner Garba phrase. The AI evaluates step timing and arm alignment.💡 TipThe transition between Dodhiyu and Hudo is where most beginners stumble — the footwork pattern changes mid-phrase. Slow down at the transition until it's automatic.
