Unit 1

Parichayamu — Introduction & Namaskaram

Learn the origins of Kuchipudi, its roots in the Bhagavata Mela tradition of Andhra Pradesh, and perform your first Namaskaram — the opening prayer to the stage, guru, and audience.

What You'll Learn

  • History of Kuchipudi and the village tradition
  • Samapadam — the neutral upright stance
  • Namaskaram sequence with correct arm positions
  • Stage etiquette and opening ritual

📋 Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1
    Stand in Samapadam
Place your feet together with heels touching and toes slightly separated — this is Samapadam, Kuchipudi's neutral stance. Stand tall: spine straight, chin level, shoulders down and back. Unlike Kathak's Samaabhang, Samapadam is symmetric with no hip tilt. Both sides carry equal weight.
💡 TipThink of standing like a lamp — centred, upright, and still. Any imbalance will amplify in every movement that follows.
  2. 2
Raise arms into prayer — Anjali Mudra
Bring both palms together at chest height, fingers pointing upward. In Kuchipudi, the elbows are held slightly higher and more outward than in everyday prayer — this opens the chest and makes the gesture visible from a distance.
💡 TipThe gap between your elbows and your body should be about the width of your fist. If the elbows drop to your sides, the gesture looks closed and small.
  3. 3
Bow to the earth — Bhoomi Pranam
Bend forward from the waist and touch the floor with the fingertips of both hands simultaneously. Hold for 2 counts. This acknowledges the earth (Bhoomi) as the foundation of all dance — in Kuchipudi tradition, the dancer asks the earth's permission before touching it with rhythm.
💡 TipThe Bhoomi Pranam is unique to Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam — it is not done in Kathak. This distinction marks the Southern classical tradition.
  4. 4
Rise and face the deity / guru
Rise back to standing. Return to Anjali Mudra. Now turn to face the imagined deity (or a picture of your guru placed in front of you) and hold the prayer for 4 counts. The face carries Bhakti (devotion) — softened eyes, slight inward gaze.
  5. 5
    Acknowledge the audience — Darshanam
Still in Anjali Mudra, slowly turn to face forward (toward the audience). Hold for 4 counts. In Kuchipudi, this moment is called Darshanam — the dancer offers a glimpse of the sacred to the audience, acknowledging their presence.
💡 TipDo not rush this moment. The audience sees you fully for the first time here. Let your composure and your Bhakti-filled face carry the opening mood.
  6. 6
    Lower arms to Natyarambha position
Slowly lower your arms outward and down to your sides in a wide, even arc — both arms symmetrically. When arms reach hip height, turn the palms to face forward. This is Natyarambha — the dance-ready position signalling the Namaskaram is complete.
💡 TipThe arc of the arms lowering should take 4 full counts. Every movement in Kuchipudi Namaskaram is slow and considered.
