Theory & Technique

Footwork is the foundation that makes every other skill possible. No matter how good your shots are, they're useless if you can't get to the shuttle in time. Start every movement with a split step — a small hop that lands on both feet at the moment your opponent hits the shuttle. This primes your muscles to move in any direction. Use chasse (side-shuffle) steps to move laterally, and a lunge step to reach the net. The most important habit: always push back to the centre of the court after every shot. Think of the centre as your home base.

Fun Fact

A professional badminton player covers an average of 6.4 kilometres during a single match — more than a tennis player in a 5-set Grand Slam match, all on a court that's only 13.4 metres long!
