Groundstrokes

Ready Position
BeginnerThe athletic base you return to between every shot. Knees bent, weight forward, racket out in front with both hands.
- · Feet shoulder-width apart
- · Knees soft and springy
- · Racket centred at waist height
- · Weight on the balls of your feet
Start drill
Forehand Groundstroke
BeginnerThe most-used shot in tennis. Turn your shoulders, step into the ball, swing low to high, and finish over your shoulder.
- · Early shoulder turn
- · Step forward into the ball
- · Contact in front of the body
- · Finish high over the opposite shoulder
Start drill
One-Handed Backhand
IntermediateAn elegant stroke requiring a deep shoulder turn, a step across the body, and full extension through the ball.
- · Full shoulder turn — show your back to the net
- · Step across with the front foot
- · Extend the hitting arm fully at contact
- · Non-hitting arm extends behind for balance
Start drill
Topspin Forehand
IntermediateDrop the racket head low, brush up the back of the ball with heavy wrist lag, and finish high above your head.
- · Racket drops well below the ball
- · Brush up the back of the ball
- · Heavy wrist lag creates spin
- · Finish above the head, not at the shoulder
Start drill
Slice Backhand
IntermediateA high-to-low swing with an open racket face that imparts backspin, keeping the ball low and skidding through the court.
- · Racket starts high — above the shoulder
- · Open racket face — strings facing the sky
- · Carve high to low through the ball
- · Finish low with the arm extended
Start drill
Serve
Coached by Coach Elena · tennis coach
Flat Serve
BeginnerA powerful first serve hit at maximum height with a flat racket face for pure speed and penetration.
- · Consistent toss slightly in front
- · Trophy position — racket behind the head
- · Full extension at contact — highest reachable point
- · Follow-through across the body
Start drill
Kick Serve
AdvancedToss behind your head, arch your back, then brush up the ball to create heavy topspin that kicks high on the bounce.
- · Toss behind and slightly left (for right-handers)
- · Deep back arch — loading the body like a bow
- · Brush up and over the ball — 7 o'clock to 1 o'clock
- · Snap the wrist sharply upward at contact
Start drill
Net Play
Coached by Coach Elena · tennis coach
Volley
IntermediateA short, compact punch at the net. No big backswing — step, block, and redirect the ball with firm wrists.
- · Continental grip — same for forehand and backhand
- · Short backswing — barely past the shoulder
- · Step into the ball — meet it in front
- · Firm wrist — punch, don't swing
Start drill
Drop Shot
AdvancedDisguised as a full groundstroke, then softened at the last instant so the ball barely clears the net and dies on the bounce.
- · Preparation looks like a normal groundstroke
- · Soften the grip at the last moment
- · Open the racket face — let the ball slide off the strings
- · Minimal follow-through — almost a dead stop
Start drill
Overhead Smash
IntermediateTrack the lob, set up underneath it, and smash it down with a motion similar to the serve — power and precision from above.
- · Non-hitting hand tracks the ball in the air
- · Move back quickly with side-shuffle steps
- · Similar motion to the serve — hit at full stretch
- · Aim for a steep downward angle
