Theory & Technique

The net shot is one of the most skillful shots in badminton. You play it when the shuttle is near the net, and the goal is to make it tumble just over to the other side, ideally spinning so it's hard to lift. Lunge forward with a big step, keeping your body low. Extend the racket in front with the face slightly open (tilted upward). The contact is extremely gentle — think of it as scooping the shuttle up and over. The shuttle should barely clear the net and die quickly. This shot demands soft hands and great racket control.

Fun Fact

The net shot requires such delicate touch that some coaches call it the 'butterfly shot' — you need to treat the shuttle as gently as catching a butterfly.
