Beginnerdefending

Turn side-on to the attacker, one foot ahead of the other.

  • · Phone on a tripod or a laptop webcam both work.
  • · Perform the movement, pause, repeat. Your coach speaks every 15 seconds.

Theory & Technique

Defending is about patience and body position, not lunging in. Get side-on to the attacker so you can turn and run with them in either direction. Bend your knees and lower your centre of gravity — this makes you harder to beat and quicker to react. Stay on the balls of your feet so you can shuffle and adjust. Keep your eyes on the ball, not the attacker's hips or shoulders — those are designed to deceive you. Your job is to delay the attacker, force them wide, and wait for backup or a mistake. The best defenders rarely tackle — they just never get beaten.

Fun Fact

Paolo Maldini, one of the greatest defenders ever, famously said: 'If I have to make a tackle, then I have already made a mistake.' His positioning was so perfect he averaged less than one tackle per game.
